Vital, Not (Swiss, contemporary), Cow Shit, undated, c.1990, dried cow dung cast in bronze, stamped with initials and numbered 44 on the underside, from the original edition of 99, 1.75 x 11.5 x 13 inches. Steve says: Not Vital (really his name) is my best friend. We met in Piazza Navona a few days after Gerald Ford spoke at my graduation from the University of Michigan. I was doing mime for money and he had a traveling surreal circus in Rome. After our first meeting, we went to Campo di Fiori to wait for John Paul Getty to go to a party. He still had both ears. It was 1973. Through Not, through our friendship, I met many artists around the world and in New York. I was the first to show his work in the United States. He was, at one time, best known for his bronze cow shit sculptures that served as currency to build a burn unit in Nepal. Turning useless cow shit into a humanitarian project put him on the map. He continues to amaze with his versatility and the worldwide scope of his creations. I reluctantly part with some of his work, hoping to share it with others.

Kiefer, Anselm (German, contemporary), Untitled Work on Paper - Pittsburgh Electric Pole and Hillside, Ravine Street, 1984-85, mixed media with shellac and oil over a photographic print, 23.25 x 15.5 inches, in the artist’s original metal frame 26.5 x 18.75 inches. Kiefer made this work while in Pittsburgh to prepare for the 1985 Carnegie International, where he shared the first place Carnegie Prize with Richard Serra. Includes an 8 x 11 inch glossy photo of the piece signed by Kiefer (last name only) on the verso. To quote Kiefer from the 1985 International exhibition catalog, “The palette represents the art of painting… the palette wants to abolish the beauty of nature.” Provenance: acquired from Lucia Trisorio, Art Basel, 1990, with original label. Ravine Street is in the Sharpsburg neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
